5/11/2023 0 Comments The good immigrant authors“Bad” immigrants are “job-stealers” or “benefit-scroungers” or, worse, potential terrorists. A black or Asian Olympic gold medallist or the winner of a reality TV programme is considered a “good” immigrant by a host nation wanting sporting success or culinary entertainment. It’s a kind of unspoken deal at the heart of multiculturalism that immigrants are perceived to be “good” or “bad”. In 21 essays by black, Asian and minority ethnic writers working across literature and the media, the book highlights the standards by which immigrants – first or second generation, refugees and asylum seekers – are either accepted into, or judged to be apart from, a dominant culture determined by whiteness. A ccording to its editor Nikesh Shukla, The Good Immigrant is “a document of what it means to be a person of colour” in Britain today. 5/10/2023 0 Comments The manipulated manIt includes any attempt to sway someone’s emotions to get them to act or feel a certain way. Log-line: Los Angeles private eye Philip Marlowe is hired by paroled convict Moose Malloy to find his girlfriend Velma, former seedy nightclub dancer. The film is set in 1941 and to me it feels like it'd have been better to have the movie presented in black and white but this is a neo-noir in colour not a classic film-noir from the 1940s. There's some great dialogue and Film-(neo)Noir patter which as you can imagine is expertly delivered by Mitchum. It seems the better performance and film is this one Farewell, My Lovely. This is the first time that Mitchum plays Marlowe, he'd play the private detective again three years later in the remake of The Big Sleep (1978). Adaptation of the 1940s novel by Raymond Chandler with Mr Robert Mitchum as the gumshoe Philip Marlowe. Thank you for supporting this small family business. The famous Thanksgiving episode has become a cherished part of American pop culture, and is now viewed as a classic Thanksgiving TV tradition. The story centers on a young boy being driven by an innate desire to bless his friends, even at the cost of his own comfort. The special premiered on CBS on November 20, 1973. A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving is a 1973 animated television special based on the comic strip Peanuts by Charles M. Severe anxiety and sleepless nights, however, are not benign conditions. For sleep issues, cognitive-behavioral therapy is given as the gold-standard treatment, while in my practice I have found it difficult to motivate patients to engage in it, and of those who do, it is sometimes helpful, but not a panacea. “Just say no,” is often the advice, and perhaps it’s more about the doctor’s discomfort than it is about the individual patient. I’ve been surprised at how often the respondents insist the patient should be told he must taper off the medication. They have tried other medications that were not helpful. These are outpatients coming for routine care, and they find the medications helpful and don’t want to discontinue them. In the Facebook group, “Psychiatry for All Physicians,” it’s not uncommon for physicians to ask what to do with older patients who are transferred to them on therapeutic doses of benzodiazepines or zolpidem. They provide fast relief in conditions where there are not always good alternatives. Still, there are circumstances where patients find these medications to be helpful, where other medications don’t work, or don’t work quickly enough. Because of the problems that are associated with their use, benzodiazepines and their relatives, the Z-drugs used for sleep, have become stigmatized, as have the patients who use them and perhaps even the doctors who prescribe them. 5/9/2023 0 Comments Dark tales shirleyThis collection of classic and newly reprinted stories provides readers with more of her unsettling, dark tales, including the "The Possibility of Evil" and "The Summer People." In these deliciously dark stories, the daily commute turns into a nightmarish game of hide and seek, the loving wife hides homicidal thoughts and the concerned citizen might just be an infamous serial killer. "For the first time in one volume, a collection of Shirley Jackson's scariest stories, with a foreword by PEN/Hemingway Award winner Ottessa Moshfegh After the publication of her short story "The Lottery" in the New Yorker in 1948 received an unprecedented amount of attention, Shirley Jackson was quickly established as a master horror storyteller. 5/9/2023 0 Comments You are special lucadoAnother literary element that I feel is important in this story is the plot. I believe children will be able to identify with the feeling of acceptance that Punchinello feels after speaking with Eli. Children will be able to relate to the character of Punchinello because even at a young age, children can feel judged. Literary Elements at work in this story: One of the literary elements that I feel is important is the characterization. While he is talking to Eli, Punchinello realizes it doesn’t matter how Wemmicks view him because Eli loved him and he was a divine masterpiece. With conversations she convinced Punchinello to go talk to Eli about everything. Lucia was one of the Wemmicks who would get all the good labels however she didn’t care what Wemmicks thought. These labels eventually hurt Punchinello to his core but then he met Lucia. Certain judgments and labels were especially put on one of the Wemmicks whose name was Punchinello. These stickers are like labels that people put on others every day like: fat, ugly, stubborn, bigot, etc. The Wemmicks judge each other with stickers. The Wemmicks were made of wood and were carved by Eli, who overlooked their village. Summary: This story is about a group of small wooden people called Wemmicks. Audience: Early elementary (Kindergarten- 3 rd grade): I think that this book is something that younger students would like, but I think it is also a good story to read to older students because it has such a good meaning. 5/9/2023 0 Comments Digital Me by J.M.
